Beelinguapp Alternatives: Where to Go Next (2026)

What does Beelinguapp do well?

Beelinguapp shows a story in two languages side by side, your language and the one you are learning, and many of its stories are narrated by native speakers. You can long-press a word or phrase for its translation and audio, change the speed of the audio, and read a story offline once you have opened it.

At the very start, seeing the whole translation next to the text, with a recorded voice reading along, can be easier than looking up one word at a time. That is a difference in format, not in having material at your level: other apps, Simply Fluent among them, have short stories written for A1 and A2 too. What Beelinguapp does differently is keep the translation beside the text, with a recorded human voice on top.

It also needs no setup. Its library has classics, cultural guides, daily news and children's books, so there is always something ready to read.

If that is working for you, there is no reason to switch.

People look for something else for one of three reasons:

1. You want to read your own books. Beelinguapp's FAQ and home page describe its own library, and neither mentions importing your own. When you have read what interests you at your level, you can't add the novel you want to read next.
2. You want any book read aloud, not only the ones with a recording.
3. You want your vocabulary tracked more closely, or you mostly read on the web.

The alternatives (October 2026)

If you want to read your own books and listen to them: Simply Fluent

This is mine.

It reads any book to you. You can hear a single word, its translation, or the whole page, in Slow, Normal or Fast. Switch on the page-turn button on the audio bar and the reader moves to the next page when the audio reaches the end of one, so you can listen like an audiobook and follow along on the page. It uses the voices installed on your phone, so it reads any book, including the ones you add yourself, without a connection: the library's stories, its classics, and the novel you imported.

That is the difference from Beelinguapp's audio. A recorded narrator only covers the stories someone recorded. A voice on your phone reads anything you open. If hearing a native narrator perform the story is what makes reading work for you, that is a reason to stay with Beelinguapp.

There is a library to start with, and you can add your own. The library has short stories you can filter by level from A1 to C2, and classic novels by writers such as Jane Austen, Jules Verne and Arthur Conan Doyle, rewritten in modern, everyday language. Add EPUB, TXT or Markdown files, or paste in text; PDF needs Premium. It has books in 45 languages, and translation works in 134, so you can read your own books in 89 more.

You see the meaning of the word you select, not the whole translation. Select a word or phrase to see what it means in that sentence. Every translation you save is shown above that word or phrase in every book you open in that language, so you don't look the same word up twice, and it becomes a flashcard. Mark a translation memorized and it is hidden; the word stays highlighted, so you can open it again if you forget it.

It runs on iPhone, iPad and Android, and you can read offline. Everyone starts with a 30-day free trial of Premium; after that it's €7.99 a month or €59.99 a year (October 2026). There is a longer side-by-side in Simply Fluent and Beelinguapp.

If you want your vocabulary tracked: LingQ

LingQ gives every word you meet a status, from new to known, keeps it across everything you read, and uses your known-word count as the main measure of progress. Its library has thousands of lessons from podcasts, books, interviews, videos and articles, it has text-to-speech voices and audio playlists, and you can import your own content. With Premium, audio is generated for lessons you import.

It is the most expensive option here: $14.99 a month on the US App Store (October 2026). Prices vary by region. The free plan allows 20 saved words and phrases and 5 lessons from imported content.

If you want recent, well-known books: Eppika

Simply Fluent's modernized classics keep the whole book at the level the author wrote it, and rewrite only the old-fashioned language. They don't include anything published recently.

Eppika does: bestselling books across different genres, adapted to your level. Its features page says the adapted versions run from A1 to C1; its App Store listing says A1 to B2. You read a version rewritten for your level, not the author's text, and many books include audio. On its website, Premium is $19.99 a month or $89.99 a year (October 2026). If you mostly read on the web: Readlang

Readlang Premium is $6 a month (October 2026), the cheapest here. Its Chrome extension and bookmarklets let you read almost any web page with a translation for any word you click, and you can upload TXT or DRM-free EPUB files. Voices for whole texts are in Premium Plus, at $15 a month.

It has no phone app: you add the website to your home screen, and it does not work offline. There is a longer comparison in Simply Fluent and Readlang.
