A reading app for people learning a language. You read books and short stories in the language you are learning, and select any word or phrase to see what it means in that sentence. Every word you save stays highlighted with its translation in every book you open in that language, and becomes a flashcard.

Yes. Free flashcard decks teach the first 100 words of a language, so you can start before you can read a page. They cover French, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, German, Hebrew and Russian for English speakers, and more languages are being added. If the language uses an alphabet you don't know yet, a free course teaches the letters for Hebrew, Russian, Greek, Ukrainian and Korean. After that, start with the short stories in the library.

Pick the language you are learning and the language you are most comfortable in. Translations appear in that second language. Then open a short story from the library. The library can be sorted by level, from A1 to C2, so you can find one that fits.

iPhone, iPad and Android phones and tablets. There is no web version.

Yes, as many as you like. Each language is kept separate: it has its own books, saved words, dictionary, flashcards and statistics, and its own translation language. Switch between them with the flag at the top of Home. Statistics can also be shown for all your languages together.

Select a word, or up to 5 words in one sentence (15 with Premium). The app reads the whole sentence and highlights the meaning that fits it, with the other meanings below. Expressions and idioms are translated as one unit, so you see what the phrase means and not each word on its own.

Simply Fluent translates words and short phrases, the pieces you can save and recognize again in other books, rather than whole sentences or paragraphs. A selection holds up to 5 words in one sentence, or 15 with Premium.

The lightbulb on a translation opens an insight: what the word means here, what else it can mean, grammar such as gender or which case follows it, the words it is often used with, and example sentences. On the free plan, an insight uses one lookup from your allowance, the same as a translation. During the trial and with Premium, translations and insights are unlimited.

Yes, for each language you learn. The first time you open a book in a new language, the app asks which language to translate into. To change it later, open the menu, then Languages & audio, choose the language and set Translation language.

Give it a thumbs down in the translation card. The vote is sent with the sentence it came from, and is used to improve the translations. To tell us more, write to us from Support in the menu.

Yes. The eye button at the top of the reader hides every translation on the page, so you can test yourself. Press it again and they come back.

Yes. You can hear a single word, its translation, or the whole page, in Slow, Normal or Fast. With Pages follow the audio turned on, the page turns by itself as the audio plays, so you can listen like an audiobook. The app uses the voices installed on your phone, so listening works without an internet connection.

Yes. Arabic, Hebrew, Persian and Urdu are laid out right to left. Chinese, Japanese and Thai, which don't put spaces between words, are split into words for you. When you select a word in Chinese or Japanese, a pronunciation card shows its pinyin or furigana. The card is free and does not use a lookup.

Yes. A book you have opened stays on your phone, and the words you saved show their meaning without a connection. Looking up a new word needs a connection, so save it to look up later. When you're back online, the app looks up every word you saved and you choose which ones to keep.

Short stories, and classic novels by writers such as Jane Austen, Jules Verne and Arthur Conan Doyle, rewritten in modern, everyday language. You can filter the library by level, from A1 to C2, and by category. New books and stories are added over time.

The library has books and short stories in 45 languages, from Arabic to Vietnamese. Translation works in 131 languages, so you can add your own books in 85 more. See every language.

Yes. Add EPUB, TXT or Markdown files, or paste in text. PDF needs Premium. The free plan includes one book of your own, and Premium has no limit.

No. Books with copy protection (DRM), which includes books bought for Kindle, can't be added. Books without copy protection can.

Yes. The app gives you instructions to send to ChatGPT, Claude or another assistant. The assistant asks what the story should be about, which language, how hard and how long, then writes it as a file. Import the file, or paste the text, and read it like any other book.

Yes, by reading about it. Add a book on the subject, or paste in an article, and the words you save are the ones that field uses. They show their translation in every book you read in that language and become flashcards like any other word.

Yes. The library asks “What should we add next?” Answer it with the book or language you would like to read.

A saved word stays highlighted with its translation in every book you read in that language, not only the one you found it in. It goes into your dictionary, where you can search it, and becomes a flashcard.

Every word you save becomes a card, with nothing to set up. Your favorites come first. After them, new words come in order of how often you have met them in your books, so you learn the words you keep seeing before moving on to less common ones. Each card comes back after a longer gap every time you know it, a technique called spaced repetition, and each card can be read aloud.

A memorized word stays highlighted in your books, but its translation is hidden, so you read the word on its own. Select it any time to see the translation again. Mark a word as memorized in its translation card or on its flashcard.

Use them however you like. One way: some words are good to know, and others are words you want in your own way of speaking. Mark those as favorites, and they come first in your flashcards. You can mark a favorite in the translation card or on the flashcard.

Words and pages read, reading time and reading speed, and how many words you saved, practiced and memorized. You see them for one language, or for all your languages together.

Yes. Your streak shows on Home and in your statistics. Achievements mark milestones in your reading. Turn them off in App preferences if you would rather not see them.

Yes. There is a reading reminder and a study reminder. Each comes at a time you pick, or you can turn it off.

In the app, you can choose the free version during setup without starting a trial. Open any book in the library, save words, use your dictionary and flashcards, see your statistics, read offline and listen. New translations and insights use your account's one-time allowance of 150 lookups. You can add one book of your own and select up to 5 words at a time.

Unlimited translations and insights, as many of your own books as you like, including PDF, up to 15 words per selection, and daily reading goals and challenges. It is €7.99 a month or €59.99 a year.

The 30-day Premium trial is optional. It starts when you choose a plan and confirm the trial, not when you create an account. Two or three days before it ends, you get an email and, if notifications are on, a phone notification. Cancel before it ends and you aren't charged; otherwise, your chosen plan begins at the price shown. If you started in the app, cancel through the App Store or Google Play. If you started on this website, sign in on the website and choose Manage subscription from the account menu.

If you keep the subscription, your chosen monthly or yearly plan begins at the price shown. If you cancel the trial, you aren't charged. Your account moves to the free version with every saved word, flashcard and statistic intact. New translations and insights then use your one-time allowance of 150 lookups. Trial lookups don't use it.

You keep reading, and nothing you saved is lost: your words, flashcards and statistics stay, and saved words still show their translation in your books. New translations and insights need Premium, or more lookups, which you get by inviting friends.

Invite a friend. After they use 50 of their free lookups, you each get 100 more. You can earn this reward for up to 10 friends. You get another 500 lookups for each invited friend who makes their first subscription payment. Lookups during a Premium trial do not count toward the 50, and starting a trial does not earn the 500.

Yes. Sign in with the same account and your saved words, your statistics and your place in each book are the same on every device.

You keep everything: your words, flashcards, statistics and books. Translations and insights come from your allowance again, and you can select up to 5 words at a time.

Prices on this site are in euros. In your country and currency the price can be different. The App Store or Google Play shows the exact price before you subscribe.

Open the menu, then Account, then Delete account. This can't be undone. A subscription is billed by the App Store or Google Play, so cancel it there as well.
