For authors

Your next reader is learning your language

People learning a language want to read the novels its native speakers read. Simply Fluent helps them read one, sentence by sentence. We are building a bookshop inside the app for those books, and we are looking for the authors who write them.

An example page from a Spanish novel, as a learner reads it. The small words above the text are translations the learner saved.
Why we are asking

Books for learners stop long before a novel starts

Books written for learners use a fixed list of words. A survey of English graded readers found very few above the 3,000-word vocabulary level. Reading a novel for native speakers without help takes a vocabulary of 8,000 to 9,000 word families (a word and its related forms, such as read, reads and reading).

Between graded readers and novels there is a gap. Simply Fluent is made for that gap: a learner translates any word or phrase and sees the meaning it has in that sentence, so they can read a book written for native speakers well before they know every word in it. What they need then are books worth reading.

Today the Simply Fluent library is short stories written with AI and classics rewritten in modern language with AI. None of it is by a living author, so no author is paid for it. The bookshop is how we change that.

Who it is for

Good for learners, good for authors

Learners

Books worth reading

In the bookshop: novels and stories by living authors, in the language the learner is learning, with the translation of any word or phrase on every page.

Authors

Readers you would not reach otherwise

People all over the world who are learning the language you write in, and who want to read something written for native speakers.

How your book is read

All of it, in your words

  • Your text, as you wrote it

Nothing in the book is simplified or rewritten. Learners read the same sentences a native speaker reads.

  • Translation of any word or phrase

A reader translates a word or a phrase and sees all its meanings, with the one it has in that sentence highlighted.

  • Saved translations are shown in every book

When a learner saves a translation, it is shown above that word or phrase in every book they read in that language, until they mark it as memorized.

  • Read aloud

A learner can have the page read out loud by their phone's own voice, so they hear your sentences while they read them. Read-aloud works offline.

The terms

Your book, your price

85%
Your share of every sale, after VAT and card fees.

Downloads
You decide whether buyers can download the book as a DRM-free EPUB marked with their name, or read it only in Simply Fluent.

Books must be written by people. We do not accept books generated by AI.

These terms are not final. We are working them out with the first authors who sign up, and we will settle them together.

Where it stands

The bookshop is not open yet

We are building it now and talking to the first authors, so there are books to buy on the day it opens.

Apply as an author
I have met authors writing in many languages, and I keep seeing the same thing: authors struggle to find readers, and learners struggle to find books in the language they are learning. I want Simply Fluent to bring the two together.
