Французский reading level test

Read a few short passages and answer three questions on each. The passages get harder or easier depending on how you do, so it takes about five minutes rather than forty.

The passages are in французский. The questions about them are in English.

  • At most 3 passages.
  • About five minutes.
  • No account, and nothing is saved anywhere.

How it works

  1. It starts in the middle

The first passage is B1, not A1. A fixed ladder spends its first two passages on text that cannot tell us anything about an intermediate reader, and every extra passage is someone giving up before the end.

  2. It moves toward you

Get two of three right and the next passage is a band harder. Get one or none and it steps back down. Land in between and the test stops, because that passage is already the answer.

  3. It measures reading, and says so

Three passages place you against the CEFR bands for reading comprehension. It says nothing about speaking or listening, which for most people sit some way behind.

What this is

A short comprehension check, not a placement exam. Every question is built around one specific misreading, so the result comes from whether you followed the passage rather than whether you recognised the words. You see all of that at the end, question by question.
